If you've never received distance reiki before, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity, or maybe even a little nervousness about what the experience will actually be like. That's completely natural. Anytime we try something new, especially something involving energy work, it's normal to have questions.
The beautiful thing about distance reiki is that there's no need to be nervous. You don't have to do anything complicated or get anything "right." In fact, your only job is to relax and be open to receiving. That's it.
But I also know that understanding what will happen can help you feel more comfortable and get the most from your session. So I’d love to walk you through exactly what to expect, from the moment you book your appointment to the days following your session.
Think of this as your friendly guide to making your distance reiki experience as smooth, comfortable, and transformative as possible.
Before Your Session: The Preparation Phase
Booking Your Appointment
The first step is simple: you'll schedule a time for your session. One of the great advantages of distance reiki is flexibility. You don't need to factor in drive time or worry about finding parking. You just need to find a time when you can be undisturbed for 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the session length you choose.
When you book, you can provide any information you’re comfortable with, such as what you're hoping to address in the session (but this is not required). Maybe you're dealing with stress or anxiety. Maybe you have physical discomfort you'd like support with. Maybe you're going through a transition and need emotional balance. Or maybe you simply want to experience what reiki feels like.
All of this information helps me connect with your energy and set the intention for the healing that will serve your highest good. It can be helpful for me to have a photo of you, though this also isn't necessary. The key is creating that energetic connection, and your name and intention are powerful tools for doing that.
Creating Your Space
While reiki can be effective anywhere, creating a peaceful, comfortable space can enhance your ability to relax and be receptive to the healing energy. If it’s possible for you, I recommend finding a quiet place to sit or lie down for the duration of the session, although again this is not a strict requirement.
Here's how to set up your space for optimal comfort:
Choose Your Spot: Pick somewhere you feel comfortable and safe. This might be your bed, your favorite cozy chair, a yoga mat on the floor, or even a quiet spot outdoors if weather permits.
Remove Distractions: Turn off your phone (or put it on do not disturb), let household members know you need quiet time, close the door if you have one. The goal is to create a bubble of peace where you won't be interrupted. Remember, this is your time. You deserve to protect it.
Set the Ambiance: Consider what helps you feel most relaxed. Soft lighting, maybe a lamp instead of overhead lights. Some people like to light a candle or use essential oils. Gentle background music can be lovely, such as meditation music or nature sounds. Whatever creates a sense of calm and sanctuary for you.
Prepare for Comfort: Have a blanket nearby, as many people feel cooler as they relax deeply during a session. If you’re lying down, have pillows to support your head and perhaps under your knees if that feels good.
The beautiful thing is that this preparation itself becomes part of your healing ritual. You're signaling to your body and nervous system: it's time to rest, to receive, to let go.
Setting Your Intention
Before your session begins, take a moment to set an intention. This isn't required, but many people find it helps them feel more connected to the healing process.
An intention might be something like:
I'm open to releasing what no longer helps me
I welcome deep healing and balance
I'm ready to receive whatever my body needs most
I invite peace and clarity into my being
Or it might be more specific:
I'm ready to release this anxiety I've been carrying
I invite healing energy to my lower back
I'm open to emotional release and healing
Say your intention silently to yourself, or out loud if that feels right. Then simply let it go. Trust that the reiki energy will flow to wherever you need it most.
During Your Session: What Actually Happens
At Your Appointment Time
When your scheduled session time arrives, simply get comfortable in your prepared space. Lie down, close your eyes if that feels right, and allow yourself to settle in. Take a few deep breaths. Let your body relax into whatever surface you're on.
While you're settling into your peaceful space, I’ll start connecting with your energy field, using specific reiki symbols and techniques to create an energetic bridge between you, no matter where in the world we both are.
You don't need to do anything active. You don't need to meditate or visualize or focus on anything in particular. The key is to simply be present and open to whatever experience unfolds.
What You Might Feel
Every person's experience is unique, but here are some of the most common sensations people report during distance reiki sessions:
Deep Relaxation: This is by far the most common experience. Many people describe it as similar to that peaceful state between waking and sleeping. Your body may become heavy in the best way, your breath can deepen, and you might feel a sense of calm.
Physical Sensations: You might feel warmth spreading through your body, particularly in areas where you've been holding tension or experiencing discomfort. Some people feel gentle tingling, a pulsing sensation, or even coolness. These sensations indicate energy movement and are completely normal.
Emotional Releases: Don't be alarmed if emotions surface. You might feel tears coming, or waves of different feelings moving through you. This is beautiful and healing. Energy that's been stuck in your body is finally able to move and release. Let it flow. This is part of the healing process.
Visual Experiences: With your eyes closed, some people see colors, lights, or have gentle visualizations. Others experience nothing visual at all, and that's perfectly fine too.
Sleep: Many people drift into sleep during sessions, and this is wonderful. Your body knows what it needs. The healing continues whether you're awake or asleep. In fact, falling asleep often indicates that your body feels safe enough to truly let go and rest.
Subtle or Nothing: Some people, especially in their first session, don't feel much at all during the session itself. This doesn't mean nothing is happening. The energy is still working, and you may notice shifts in the hours and days afterward. Reiki works whether you consciously feel it or not.
It's important to remember: there's no "right" way to experience reiki. Your body will respond in exactly the way it needs to. Some people have dramatic experiences, others have subtle ones. Both are equally valid and healing.
What I’ll Be Doing
While you're resting comfortably in your space, I’ll be actively channeling healing energy to you. They might be visualizing you, using a photo as a focal point, or working with a surrogate object like a pillow to represent your body.
I’ll move through different hand positions, directing reiki energy to your chakras (energy centers) and to any areas that need extra support. I might spend more time in certain areas where I sense energetic blockages or where you've indicated you need healing.
After Your Session: Integration and Self-Care
Immediately Following
When your session ends, don't jump up right away. Give yourself a few minutes to slowly return to full awareness. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Take some deep breaths. Open your eyes gently.
This is one of the beautiful advantages of distance reiki, you don't have to immediately drive anywhere or interact with the busy world. You can simply rest, extend your relaxation with a nap if that feels right, or slowly ease back into your day at your own pace.
Many people describe feeling pleasantly floaty or a bit "out of it" immediately after a session. This is normal and will pass. Take your time. Move slowly and gently as you transition back.
Essential Aftercare
There are a few important things to do after your distance reiki session:
Drink Water: Energy work can release toxins and stimulate your body's natural detoxification processes. Drinking plenty of water helps flush these out and supports the healing integration.
Rest if Needed: Some people feel energized after a session and ready to take on the world. Others feel pleasantly tired and need to rest. Both responses are normal. Honor what your body is telling you.
Eat Mindfully: If you're hungry, choose nourishing, gentle foods. Your body has been doing deep healing work, even if you weren't consciously aware of it. Support that process with foods that make you feel good.
Journal Your Experience: Consider writing down anything you noticed during or immediately after your session. Sensations, emotions, thoughts, insights, anything that felt significant. These notes can be valuable as you track your healing journey over multiple sessions.
What to Notice in the Following Hours and Days
The healing doesn't stop when the session ends. In fact, the integration process often continues for days afterward. Here's what you might notice:
Sleep Changes: Many people report sleeping more deeply the night of their session. You might sleep longer than usual, or find that your sleep is more restful and dream-filled. This is your body continuing the healing work while you rest.
Emotional Processing: Feelings that surfaced during the session might continue to move through you. You might find yourself thinking about old memories or seeing situations from a new perspective. You might feel lighter, more at peace, or ready to address things you've been avoiding.
Physical Shifts: Areas of tension or discomfort may feel different. Sometimes pain decreases immediately. Sometimes it shifts locations before releasing completely. Trust the process.
Increased Energy or Calm: You might notice you have more vitality for your daily activities, or you might feel a deep sense of calm and centeredness that wasn't there before. You may find yourself less reactive to stressors that usually bother you.
Subtle Awareness: Pay attention to small things. Maybe you handle a difficult conversation with more grace. Maybe you make a decision that's been weighing on you. Maybe you simply feel more like yourself. These subtle shifts are significant.
Making the Most of Your Distance Reiki Experience
Be Open, But Don't Force
The most important thing you can bring to your distance reiki session is openness. Not expectation, not effort, just openness. Allow the experience to be whatever it is without trying to make it happen or judging whether you're "doing it right."
Communication is Welcome
If you have questions or concerns before, during, or after your session, please let me know! I’m here to guide you through the process and address any uncertainties you might have.
Consider Regular Sessions
While a single distance reiki session can be beneficial, many people find that regular sessions create deeper, more lasting transformation. Think of it like going to the gym once versus having a regular practice. Consistent sessions help your nervous system learn new patterns of relaxation and balance.
Combine with Other Wellness Practices
Distance reiki works beautifully alongside other healing modalities. It complements therapy, medical treatment, massage, yoga, meditation, and any other wellness practices you're engaged in. Don't think of it as replacing other support, but as enhancing everything else you're doing for your wellbeing.
Common Questions About the Experience
What if I don't feel anything during the session? This is more common than you might think, especially for first-timers. It doesn't mean the reiki isn't working. You might notice the effects more in the days following the session, or your experience might deepen with subsequent sessions.
Can I move during the session? Absolutely. If you need to adjust your position, scratch an itch, or shift around for comfort, go ahead. The energy will continue to flow regardless. Your comfort is more important than staying perfectly still.
What if I have to use the bathroom? If you need to get up during the session, that's completely fine. Simply return to your comfortable position when you're ready.
Is it normal to feel emotional? Very normal. In fact, emotional releases are often a sign of deep healing. We store so much in our bodies, old hurts, unexpressed feelings, unprocessed experiences. Reiki creates a safe space for these to surface and release. Let the emotions flow without judgment.
What if I fall asleep? Perfect. Falling asleep is actually a sign that your body feels safe enough to completely let go. The healing continues whether you're conscious or not. Many practitioners say that some of the deepest healing happens when people sleep through sessions.
You're Ready
Now you know what to expect from your distance reiki session, from preparation through aftercare. You understand that your only job is to be open and receive. You know that whatever you experience will be exactly what you need in that moment.
Distance reiki offers a unique opportunity to prioritize your wellbeing in a way that's accessible, convenient, and deeply effective. It's healing that comes to you, meeting you exactly where you are.
So prepare your space. Set your intention. Get comfortable. And allow yourself to receive the gift of healing energy that's waiting for you.
